  20. This sounds like a modem overrun error, i.e. your system can't always fetch 
  21. the incoming data from the UART before the next byte arrives and overwrites 
  22. it.  If you don't have a 16550A UART or equivalent, get one.  Disable 
  23. multi-sector IDE transfers (often called 'block mode' in the BIOS setup 
  24. screen), disable write-back ('deferred') disk caches, and reduce the serial 
  25. port speed.  Check out the Navas FAQ for more hints
